Along the axis of time, everything changes: fashions and trends come and go, technology advances and no generation is ever the same.

I was born in the Internet Age but, as I developed and grew – too quickly for my parents’ liking, so did the technology – again, too quickly for my parents’ liking – and now here we are: the Social Media Age. God forbid.

At this moment in time, we will be checking our wallets and purses for a bit of change near every Sainsbury’s entrance because this is the time of year where we celebrate those from generations like my Grandparents’. Those who were thrust into bitter conflict upon coming of age. Tragically, not all came out of this time of great upheaval as my Grandad did but all were part of a time of rapid advance in technology.

The Americans call those who fought in World War II the Golden Generation, a generation which is responsible for, among countless other innovations, the first programmable digital computer, Colossus – the code-breaking marvel. The offspring of such a machine has gone on to define the age I have grown up in.

When my dad left school, around a third of his male peers would go straight down one of the local pits. A job was almost guaranteed if you were willing to work. Yet, by the mid 1980s, deindustrialisation led to soaring unemployment, particularly here in Mansfield, so the youth had to turn their attention to another field.

Queue the internet; the biggest revolution in information, communication and technology the world had ever seen and Generation X was the generation there to guide it into the new millennium.

Companies and entire industries who have failed to utilise web marketing strategies continue to struggle to make the money they once did. Take the record industry for example, research has suggested that since the turn of the century the industry’s revenue has at least halved.

Throughout school, I was very much short of a plan for my future but I clung to the idea that I was still part of the Internet Age and that, if nothing else came along, I could always find a job working on computers.

As time progressed and as I started to fill out Ucas applications and begin to think more seriously about my future, it became apparent that things weren’t going to be as straightforward as had I thought. I began to hear of rising youth-unemployment and phrases like “the next Lost Generation”. I thought a degree in computing may no longer be ideal. I thought I’d missed the boat on the Internet Age. Instead, I chose to study English Language and Journalism.

For me, social networks were just a means of talking to friends but when I began to take more notice, I started to see them for the new dimension that they are. My journalism lecturers – ex-journalists and refugees from another Internet Age casualty: the print media – spoke endlessly of the challenges facing the industry.

…and they’re challenges that ALL businesses and industries face, no matter the field.

From monitoring online trends, it has become apparent to marketers and businesses that social media will soon eclipse corporate websites as a means of informing audiences.
