PLEASE BE AWARE: This is an old article, and while we think there are still nuggets of good advice included here, it may be out of date. From Guy Kawasaki’s posterous blog Holy Kaw, came this short but useful video containing 5 tips that makes Seve Jobs one of the most successful presenters.
The video is a short interview with Carmine Gallo, who has just written a book about this subject. If you can manage to get pass the advert at the start it gives some great tips and techniques that Steve Jobs uses when presenting keynote’s for apple.
To summarise the tips are as follows:
1. Set up the problem and then give the solution. Describe the problem your customer or client is suffering from. Make sure you take them their so they can feel the anguish it causes. Then give them the solution. Demonstrate how it solves the problem and makes their life easier.
2. Descriptive headlines. Summarise the product or solution in to a simple and straight forward statement, that they won’t forget. Make it short and snappy so it creates headlines and can be easily shared, preferably less than 140 characters. This fits in beautifully with branding. If you understand your product or service and have created a brand around it, then you will already know the answer to this one.
3. Sell the dream. Don’t just list the features and benefits. Sell the emotional side as well. How will this product or service change their life? Make sure you get the emotional hook across. Again if you have sorted out your brand then you will know what this is, and can easily include it.
4. Rehearse. Goes without saying really.
5. Keep it Simple. Don’t clutter the presentation with the unnecessary. Decide what your key message is and stick to making sure you get that across.
As you can see from reading this, if you go through the process of branding, it sets up your product or service ready for future promotions. There is no guest work on what you need to put in your presentation, if all follows from the brand. This is an extra tip not mentioned here, but it’s what Steve Jobs does and what apple is brilliant at.
